Defying Boundaries: A Triumph in Transgender Recovery

Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Layers of Change as we welcomed our first client into our mobile clothing closet initiative. This individual's journey to recovery highlighted the unique challenges faced by transgender and gender nonconforming individuals within traditional recovery spaces.

Upon meeting our client, it was evident that attending a recovery meeting was a daunting prospect. Gendered recovery spaces can often feel exclusionary and unwelcoming to transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, exacerbating feelings of fear and isolation. Additionally, our client shared that they struggle with agoraphobia, making it even more challenging to venture outside their comfort zone.

Despite these obstacles, we were determined to provide support and encouragement every step of the way. With our assistance, our client bravely took the first step towards recovery by attending a local meeting. Witnessing them gather the courage to enter that space and grab a white chip brought tears to my eyes, it wasn't just my hormone medication either! It was full circle moment for me. Someone in the trans community led me to my first meeting, and Layers of Change was the vehicle used to lead another kindred spirit down the same path. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength within each individual.
